Green growing grass in snow

A Beginner’s Guide to Winter Lawn Care

Winter Lawn Care Tips

Winter can be a challenging season for lawn enthusiasts, especially for those new to lawn care. However, with the proper preparation and maintenance, you can ensure your lawn remains healthy and ready to thrive once spring arrives.

Here’s a beginner’s guide to winter lawn care from our Summer Rain team, offering essential tips and practices to keep your lawn in top shape through the cold months.

Preparing Your Lawn for Winter

  1. Aeration. Before the ground freezes, aerate your lawn to alleviate soil compaction. This process allows air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots more effectively, promoting a healthier lawn. Aeration helps your lawn cope with the winter stress and makes it more resilient.
  2. Fertilization. Apply a slow-release winter fertilizer in late fall to give your lawn the nutrients it needs. This will provide a food source for the grass throughout the dormant period and help it bounce back in spring.
  3. Mowing and Raking. Continue mowing your lawn until the grass stops growing, gradually lowering the cutting height with each mow. Remove fallen leaves and debris regularly to prevent suffocation and reduce the risk of disease. A clean, short lawn is less susceptible to winter issues.

Ongoing Winter Care

  1. Snow and Ice Management. Be cautious when removing snow and treating ice to avoid damaging the lawn. Use a plastic or rubber shovel instead of metal, which can tear into the grass. When treating icy areas, opt for non-toxic ice melts to protect not only your lawn in winter but also the environment!
  2. Traffic Control. Minimize foot traffic on your lawn during winter, as walking on frozen grass can cause compaction and damage. Consider creating designated pathways to prevent wear and tear on the lawn.
  3. Preventing Damage. Avoid using harsh chemicals or salt-based products on your lawn. If you need to de-ice, choose pet- and plant-friendly products.

Planning for Spring Recovery

  1. Inspect and Repair. Once winter starts to wane, inspect your lawn and irrigation system for any signs of damage. Reseed bare patches and repair areas affected by winter stress to ensure grass growth returns evenly in spring.
  2. Spring Cleaning. As temperatures rise, give your lawn a thorough raking to remove dead grass and debris. This helps to stimulate growth and allows sunlight and air to reach the soil.
  3. Early Fertilization. As your lawn begins to green, apply a balanced, quick-release fertilizer to kickstart the growing season. Ensure you use the right product for your grass type to maximize its effectiveness.
